California State Senator Bradford is seeking a highly motivated and energetic person with excellent organizing skills and commitment to public service to join the Capitol staff as a Consultant to the Legislative Black Caucus.

The Consultant for the California Legislative Black Caucus develops and executes the Caucus’ budget and legislative agenda on all topics impacting Black Californians, including but not limited to social justice, civil rights, education, housing, health, transportation, and environmental issues.

The Consultant represents CLBC Members with other Legislators, government officials, interest groups, and the general public. Duties include planning, developing, and executing annual CLBC events; identifying issues requiring engagement by the CLBC and recommending decisions or actions to be taken; assisting the CLBC Members with long-term planning and identification of priorities; coordinating legislative issues and actions with other offices; overseeing message development for press and speeches for public events; Prepare talking points and speeches for presentation of resolutions or other recognitions; developing and implementing a social media strategy for various CLBC initiatives; processing and executing scheduling requests and travel accommodations; planning and executing press conferences concerning CLBC issues and legislative agenda; and developing and maintaining a database of key stakeholders and supporters of the CLBC. The consultant is also responsible for supervising, training, and counseling interns, Senate Fellows, and CLBC volunteers on political, budget, and legislative strategy; briefing the Chair and Vice-Chair weekly on CLBC issues including, but not limited to scheduling, constituent requests, and event preparation; conducting research on potential opportunities to fill high-level job vacancies in state government with Black Californians; preparing letters of support, recommendation, and policy agenda to be sent to the Governor, state agencies, and other organizations; creating appropriate forms and applications for CLBC scholarships and leadership conferences; screening applicants for youth leadership opportunities, including coordinating with K-12 counselors and administrators regarding youth application requirements such as letters of recommendation and official transcripts; updating the CLBC website as needed; as well as performing general office duties, such as answering phones and responding to emails.

Candidates must possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills, as well as strong communication and letter-writing skills. Candidates must have an understanding of CLBC’s history, role, and function within the legislature; should have experience in event planning organization, and execution; and be proficient in word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. 5-year combination of project management and legislative experience. Must be willing to travel throughout the state.

This position is located in Sacramento, CA. 
Salary starts at $6,516 per month.
Final salary will be commensurate with experience and education.
